Our History Title

The concept of a marriage and relationship coaching company, like Marriage Matters, has long been in the works for its founder Matt Townsend. As a child of divorced parents, Matt grew up paying particular attention to the relationships of others. Inevitably, that drove him to achieve both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in the field of Communication and has him actively pursuing his doctorate degree in Human Development.

Matt’s passion for effectiveness and results-based training and development were sharpened during his 10-year career traveling the country as a leadership and communications consultant with Franklin Covey and his own company, Capacity Consulting. While Matt trained and coached top executives and managers from companies like UPS, Coca-Cola, General Mills, Lockheed Martin, CNN, Minute-Maid, Hewlett Packard, Honda, Microsoft and the US Navy he learned the importance of getting results with clients even when their employees were resistant to change.

When he wasn’t on the road speaking and delivering workshops Matt began utilizing his conflict resolution skills and communication background to help distressed couples mediate solutions as they navigated their way through the complexities of divorce. Matt noticed that many couples who came to him to end their marriage really didn’t want to divorce. They just didn’t know what else to do. They thought that they had tried everything.

That was when Marriage Matters was born. Matt decided he would no longer devote his time and materials to helping couples divorce but instead, wanted to focus solely on improving a couple’s ability to get results together. Matt began coaching couples that were meeting with divorce mediators and helped them begin to succeed in their marriage. Couple by couple, he customized the Marriage Matters curriculum into what it is today. Since then, Matt has been improving couples’ abilities to communicate and to relate with each other. His high success rate attests to his knowledge and ability to save marriages.
